Great Barrier Reef

Another chance to be a Superhero!

While enjoying munchies at a New Year's Day party, a group of us were discussing different outdoors events we enjoy and the different awe inspiring aspects of nature we have experienced on our outings. With my pale skin, the subject of tolerance to sun exposer edged its way into the conversation, as it usually does, which is when I learned I'm a pink person! I had to giggle, Game of Thrones has made its way into our everyday definitions (GoT) is the first place I had heard the term pink person).

Well, for all of us pink people in the world, sunscreen is one of the greatest products ever invented. It turns out, however, that the current potions we slather on are not so optimal for the environment. So, what is old is new again. We are about to go back to nature to help curtail the human part of the equation causing damage to barrier reefs.

Back in February of this year, 2019, news about reef friendly sunscreen popped to the forefront when Key West banned the use of sunscreens containing the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate. Test have found that some of the chemicals contained in modern sunscreens are one component in hastening the death of barrier reefs. The legislation does not go into effect until Jan. 1, 2021. But there are many reef friendly option from which to choose right now, so you don't have to wait. Ditch your old sunscreen and join the movement to clean up the world's oceans.

Never go to the beach?

Doesn't matter, every drop of water goes somewhere and eventually makes it back to nature. So whether you are a hiker, biker, walker, runner, or on vacation find an eco-friendly sunscreen - every little bit helps.

This week I needed to pick up some sunscreen and happened to remember the article. I dutifully googled the "sunscreen oceans" (couldn't think of reef friendly) and quickly found list of sunscreens certified reef safe. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any on the shelves in the grocery store.

So I started to surf the web (oh, so many pun possibilities) and came up with the list below from Lush Palm lushpalm.com. Then I decided to dig further and add some extra information on ingredients and share the results with you.

But before I get to the list I want to give you some background as to why it is so important to make this change.

Threats to reefs ~ climateandreefs.org

The country is an archipelago of small islands that are mostly uninhabited, and more than 80% of the land surface is only a meter or less above mean sea level.

Reefs of the Bahamas are threatened by environmental disturbances and human use. Key environmental threats include hurricanes and coral bleaching events. Key threats from human use include overfishing, marine debris, sewage, ballast discharge, oil spills, ship groundings, erosion from coastal development and invasive species like lionfish.

Projections from climate models suggest that reefs in the area will annually experience thermal stress severe enough to cause bleaching after 2040. Coral calcification may decline as much as 10% by 2040 due to ocean acidification.

The current 2019 list of chemicals that should NOT be included in your sunscreen:

· oxybenzone

· octinoxate

· octocrylene

· 4-methyl-benzylidene camphor triclosan

· methylparaben

· ethylparaben

· butylparaben

· benzyl paraben

· phenoxyethanol

Favorite Vacation Destinations that have Banned Toxic Sunscreens

· Hawaii

· Bonaire

· Palau

· Key West, Florida

· Mexico is allowing each resort, beach, and preserves to make the choice to ban. Some places with known bans are Riviera Maya, most ecotourism preserves, natural water parks, as well as spots in Cozumel and Playa del Carmen. Some places are going to the point of confiscating product at airports.

An estimated 14,000 tons of sunscreen currently washes into our oceans annually.

Note: There is one sunscreen stick listed below that comes in colors and would be fun for football fans that like to "show their colors". Look for the pic below.
